Heinz Lofts
1912-1931 | Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Albert Kahn, Original Architect
Located along the Allegheny River in Pittsburgh, the old H.J. Heinz factory sat for years as a deteriorating testament to the city’s turn-of-the-century industrial heritage. Five historic buildings in Heinz factory and headquarters complex were rehabilitated to house 267 apartment units and 450 interior parking spaces. The tall and deep factory spaces with no internal courtyards offered numerous challenges for the conversion to apartments. All five buildings are linked by a series of bridges at various floor levels. The $70.2 million project included over 594,000 sq. ft. of space, opening in April 2005.
